About Carrillo Corner
In 2018, the Oakland Community Land Trust (OakCLT) purchased a 7-unit live-work building from its longtime owner Dixi Carrillo with financial assistance from the City of Oakland. Dixis’s goal of selling the property to OakCLT was so that the unique studios she and her family created over the span of approximately 40 years would continue to remain affordable for lower-income creative people. With the support of OakCLT, the current residents of the building are in the process of establishing the Carrillo Corner Artist Cooperative — a Limited Equity Housing Cooperative (LEHC) — a shared form of permanently affordable homeownership for multi-unit buildings. Eventually, the residents will collectively own the building through the LEHC, while the land will continue to be stewarded by OakCLT in perpetuity.
